BMW Motorrad Adds Dynamic Brake Lights to Motorcycles

BMW Motorrad will introduce starting from 2016 dynamic brake lights, a feature only available in cars. The system will be available on six models in Europe.

This means that BMW will become the only motorcycle manufacturer to equip their bikes with such a safety system. The technology flashes the rear brake lights when the motorcycle decelerates and thus is making the motorcycle more visible to other drivers.

The system is only available on the European market and it is an optional feature on the 2016 R1200GS, R1200GS Adventure, S1000XR models and comes standard for the K1600GT, GTL and GTL Exclusive models.

Dynamic brake lights has two levels. The first one is activated under strong braking when the motorcycle is travelling at speeds above 50 km/h (31 mph). The result is that the brake lights start to flash at a frequency of 5 Hz. The second level is activated when the motorcycle’s speed is below 14 km/h (9 mph). In this situation, the rear turn signals flash as hazard lights. They will continue to flash as long as the motorcycle has a speed under 20 km/h (12 mph).

BMW Motorrad  offers dynamic brake lights together with ABS Pro, available only with the “Ride Modes Pro” option, for the 2016 R1200GS, R1200GS Adventure and S1000XR. The K1600GT, GTL and GTL Exclusive will have dynamic brake lights  and ABS Pro as standard on all 2016 models.
