BMW may be working on a boxer engine sportbike.
It seems like a rumour summer with Ducati preparing a mystery bike for the road and Honda’s plans to revive the two-stroke engines, now we hear news that BMW may be developing a supersport bike based on a boxer engine. The german company’s big sales success with the S1000RR superbike and the R-series flat twin engines make the perfect scenario for a possible development of a boxer sportbike.
Motorrad, one of Germany’s leading motorcycle magazines, makes speculations on a possible comeback for the R1200S model. Rumour has it that Wunderlich, an aftermarket tuner specialized in modifying BMW motorcycles, may have some involvement in the project. In the past, BMW used Wunderlich stickers on prototype machines that later transformed into production models.
BMW’s history with flat twin engine sportbikes date back to 2006-2007 R1200S and later on the HP2 Sport available between 2008-2012. Perhaps, we’ll see a Wunderlich boxer engine powered sportbike at the EICMA show this fall.
